Today we took Luna the Wolfdog hiking in a new trail and we ran into a rattlesnake! I used the monopod I had my camera attached to in order to try and scare it away into the bushes and out of the main walkway where everyone was hiking. There was an older couple who originally spotted it and alerted us. This is another very real danger of hiking. We see signs all the time warning about rattlesnakes, cougars and bears. We hope that each time we are able to spot these guys first before Luna so that she is kept safe and unharmed while on these hikes with us! Please never attempt to do what I was doing. I have worked with these types of snakes for many years so I am familiar with their mannerisms and what they are capable of. I would never suggest anyone ever try to make a snake like this move. If you encounter one, just go the other way! It’s not worth getting bit, especially where there is no signal to call for help.
Skip to 4:10 to see the snake.
